Members of the Lowcountry PBK Association were honored to attend the installation of the Phi Beta Kappa Epsilon Chapter of South Carolina at the College of Charleston on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025. The installation marked the official beginning of the College of Charleston's Phi Beta Kappa chapter. In addition to attending the event and congratulating the chapter's first class of inductees, Lowcountry PBK Association President Hillary Hutchinson was given an opportunity to speak to the event's attendees about the association. All students inducted in this inaugural class of the Epsilon Chapter of South Carolina were subsequently invited to join the Lowcountry PBK Association free-of-charge for their first year.
The College of Charleston was awarded this chapter at the 2024 Triennial Meeting of Phi Beta Kappa, where current Lowcountry PBK Association Board Member Dave Zoellner cast a "yes" vote in favor of the chapter on behalf of our association. Dr. Gibbs Knotts, who is finishing up his board term with our association in 2025, played a critical role in the College of Charleston's successful application for membership. Past board members and association members also played an invaluable role over the years, including retired College of Charleston professor Dr. John Newell and current College of Charleston professor Dr. Beth Sundstrom. The application and approval process for university chapters is extensive and selective, with only 293 chapters in existence across the United States.
The Lowcountry PBK Association congratulates the College of Charleston on its new chapter status and all of the students in the inaugural class of inductees on their accomplishment.
